There are three primary formats of 8mm video that will comprise your collection of videotapes. You probably have a mix of the following videotape formats if you were shooting over an extended period of time.
Hi8 tapes are one of three 8mm video formats - Video8 (also called 8mm or Regular8), Hi8 and Digital 8. Hi8 is short for Hi-band Video 8, and is a video format made popular by Sony in the late 80's to compete with the S-VHS format.
While Hi8 Videotape cassettes are the same size as regular Video8 cassettes, Hi8 Videotapes use higher grade videotape and recording heads to record more detailed pictures. Hi8 tapes are rated at a luminance resolution of 420 horizontal lines, whereas Regular8 or 8mm tapes are at 240 lines.
Hi8 videotapes will usually contain two hours of video if you used the whole tape. Depending on the type of Hi8 video cassette you originally purchased, however, it may only contain one hour of video footage.
Unfortunately, there is no Hi8 tape adapter that would allow you to watch your Hi8 video through your VCR, and Sony has discontinued manufacturing most Hi8 players and cameras. If you don't have your original Hi8 Camera or a Hi8 Video Player, your best bet is to send us your Hi8 videotapes, and we will convert them to high quality DVDs that you can play on your Set-top DVD player or your computer.
