SVHS stands for Super Video Home System. SVHS was introduced in the late 80s as an improved version of VHS. SVHS captures greater picture details (almost twice that of VHS) because of improved luminance resolution. SVHS cassettes are the same size as VHS cassettes 7 3/8" wide X 4" high X 1" deep (see SVHS cassette image right) and use a half inch magnetic tape as the recording medium. Many SVHS VCRs will record and playback regular VHS tapes, but SVHS tapes will not playback on VHS VCRs.
